The Real Threat: Failure to Adopt

Opinion By Oliver Fox  ·  July 2026

Why the biggest danger AI poses to your business is not the one in the headlines

For the better part of a year, the news has been full of unsettling stories about Artificial Intelligence. You have probably seen some version of them. For anyone unfamiliar with those stories, I’ve included a few links at the end of this post.

By now, most of you should have received several cautionary notices from my colleague Chris, our Chief Security Officer. That guidance addresses risks that warrant serious attention.

The Greatest Threat

Having said that, I believe failing to consider AI adoption poses the biggest long-term risk to most businesses. Whether we like it or not (and I’ll set aside my personal take on this here), AI is here, and here to stay. Businesses that don’t adopt AI into their operations run a real risk of obsolescence.

I say this because we are witnessing it firsthand. Sandbox Technologies works with businesses in a breadth of verticals and a clear pattern is emerging: Some are adopting AI, many are not. The ones actively adopting are improving their workflows. As those gains fully compound, firms taking a wait-and-see approach may find it increasingly difficult to catch up.

A spectrum of adoption

Right now, we see the full spectrum, and every business sits somewhere on it.

Aggressive

Organizations hiring firms like ours to build in-house AI on locally hosted servers, often to satisfy the compliance rules of their industry.

Measured

Businesses engaging such a team to study their workflows and build modest, targeted tools: coding invoices, drafting content, conforming billing entries, and, for the ambitious, agentic AI that handles data entry.

Unwitting

Companies that have not adopted AI officially, while their employees quietly already have. The exposure is unmanaged data leaving their control; the upside is an employee who becomes the catalyst for real efficiency, provided they bring it to them rather than keeping it to themselves.

On Adoption

We are undeniably at a unique crossroads, one poised to make the dot-com era pale by comparison. Unlike the arrival of the modern storefront, AI reaches the processes behind the scenes. Physical AI adds another dimension, including world foundation models used in developing robots and autonomous systems, such as NVIDIA’s Cosmos platform. Taken together, these developments suggest that many businesses and professions will face substantial change.

But not unlike the dot-com gold rush, with change comes opportunity, and opportunities don’t always announce themselves; they accumulate quietly, and then they are simply there. The impacts are undeniably coming. We can choose to ignore them, or embrace the mindset that what truly defines each of us is not our performance under ordinary, predictable circumstances, but our ability to assess and confidently navigate uncertainty.

Our Minimum Recommendation

Two measures form the baseline we recommend for every client:

  1. An AI privacy model: a private AI service in a dedicated Cloud environment, designed to identify and redact sensitive information before content reaches an outside model, then restore it in the reply. Concurrent with deployment, our recommendation is that measures be taken to restrict the use of unmanaged AI models.

  2. Formal AI policies in which you establish how AI is to be used across your business. These policies should be reviewed and approved by your legal counsel before implementation.

Our Recommended Approach

The recommended approach includes the baseline measures above, plus an assessment of business needs and workflows. That assessment can help identify where AI may be introduced in a measured way.

Navigating the Risk/Reward Matrix

Risk tolerance is a decision that involves a great many factors, and ultimately one only the business owner or executive management can make. Some of these improvements will take hold and prove viable; others run the risk of being immediately outmoded by innovations within the core AI models themselves. I expect some successful implementations to produce gains immediately, and some in a very big way. Others may produce measurable gains over time, although the timing and extent of those gains might vary. Sadly, some will also fail.

While the choice of where, what, and how to adopt is not without risk, those risks can be mitigated to some degree by focusing on simple, reliable AI implementations that streamline existing functions, where the manual cost and the return on investment are quantifiable and make sense before any work is commenced.

The Takeaway

What’s important is that everyone understands a genuinely paradigm-changing event is happening. While economic and other factors make timing exceedingly difficult to predict, to treat AI as a passing fad, or to expect this genie will return to its bottle would be a grave mistake. Will AI displace workers and jobs? Almost certainly. Will it end life as we know it? That answer is above my pay grade. What I can say is it’s here to stay, and everyone would be wise to heed the call and adopt a strategy before it is too late.

In a follow-up to this article, I will walk through the fundamentals every owner and manager should understand about these tools: how they work, how to use them well, and where they tend to fail.
